THE FISH PHILOSOPHY
At the June 2006 Volunteer Appreciation, a new way of looking at the Day Centre environment, something called “The FISH Philosophy”, was introduced to staff and volunteers. This philosophy is based on four simple, interconnected principles that everyone can tailor to their own life and work.
The first principle is PLAY. A light hearted attitude can be inspiring and may energize problem solving abilities. Work does not have to be boring. A little creativity can make work fun and make time fly by, not just for you but for our clients too. Just think how reassured a new client will be when she sees what a great time everyone is having at our Day Centre. Happy, smiling people are less frightening and sometimes you just have to smile right back at them.
The second principle is MAKE THEIR DAY. Think back to a time when someone did something nice for you, just out of the blue, for no special reason at all. Didn’t it make you feel great? What can you do, what small unexpected treat could you give, that would make a client feel special and valued? Small acts of kindness and lifting someone’s spirits can also make your day. And don’t forget your fellow staff and volunteers.
BE THERE is the third principle. You know how life usually is – busy, busy, busy. You might be physically present at the Day Centre but your mind is off in a dozen different directions. You’ve got to pick up groceries on the way home, you’ve got to get ready for that next Girl Guide meeting tomorrow, Bob’s got to get a ride to soccer practice and you’ve got to remember to phone your mother tonight. With this principle, the point is to pay attention. Give your undivided attention to the person in front of you. Challenge yourself to be present in all your encounters. Don’t let your mind wander. Refocus on the person or task at hand.
The final principle is CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE. Here’s a good example of how this is possible. You’re having a rotten day. The dishwasher broke, the dog tracked muddy water all over the floor, the kids are bickering and it’s pouring rain outside. The phone rings and it’s your great aunt Bess who’s been really down lately. Suddenly your voice goes up and you’re telling her about all the exciting events in your life and anything else you can think of to brighten her day. You just chose your attitude. Before you come to the Day Centre, choose your attitude just like you choose your clothes. Decide you are going to have a great day and make it great for others too. “Today I can complain because the weather is rainy or I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free.” Author unknown.

The FISH philosophy is very simple. Anyone can apply its principles to wherever they are working or volunteering. The main backbone is personal accountability every single day. Let’s create a culture of lightheartedness where play and creating an atmosphere of fun for our clients, our staff and our volunteers becomes important to everyone. Let’s make coming to the Day Centre a joyful experience.
